David Hollywood - Chair of Governors
I was born and raised in Glasgow, where I trained as a Chartered Accountant
I have enjoyed a long and varied career in finance and general management through which I have lived and worked in several countries in Europe and North America. I have sat on the boards of a number of different quoted and unquoted companies
My wife, Helen, and I first moved to Marlow in 1976 and both our daughters attended Spinfield school in the 80's
I have been retired since 2014 and became a Governor at Spinfield in 2015. Until my appointment as Chair in December 2020. I have chaired the Resources Committee with responsibility for finance, human relations, premises and safety.
Keith Spence - Vice Chair and Chair of Resources
I graduated from Leeds University in 1971 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Initially working for Monsanto Chemicals, I then moved into the food industry working for Imperial Tobacco Foods and Mars Confectionery for 12 years. My Mars experience led me into Mars Electronics and from there I joined RM Education for nearly 30 years, working in many roles including Manufacturing Director, Information Systems Director and Services Director. RM being the leading supplier of Software and Services to UK education gave me the opportunity to work with many schools and local authorities. I retired after 46 very happy and enjoyable years in 2017.
My wife Sue and I moved to Marlow in 1975 and we have lived here since bringing up our two boys Tim and Matt who are now both married to Laura and Maidlin respectively and who also live in Marlow. We are very blessed to have six grandchildren who have either been to, are currently at or will be coming to Spinfield School.
Spinfield is an excellent school and I feel very privileged to be a Governor with an opportunity to give something back. As Chair of Resources, I have responsibility for finance, human relations, premises and health and safety and in addition I am assigned as the Governor for Religious Education and Humanities as well as being attached to a year group which gives me a wonderful insight into the children’s life at school.
Clare Barford - Co-opted Governor
I have been a parent governor at Spinfield school since September 2015. I am also the chair of the Teaching, Learning and Standards Committee. I am a mum of 3 children all in primary schools in Marlow (2 attend Spinfield School and 1 attends Holy Trinity School.) I moved to Marlow 4 years ago, after having spent 10 years abroad working and living in Bermuda and Canada.
I am very interested in the differences and similarities in the education systems for children around the world and am very keen on Spinfield’s desire to promote an international awareness in their pupils. I am currently a full-time parent, but before having my third child I worked in a large Paediatric Hospital in Toronto, Canada as a Neuroscience and Trauma Nurse and then a Transitional Care Coordinator.
Steven Eltringham - Staff & Development Governor
Before Spinfield I had a wide and varied career, starting as an apprentice motor mechanic in my father’s business. I then completed 13 years’ service in the Army, culminating at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. I was deployed in several conflict zones and visited many countries around the world. After my service, I entered the retail leisure industry with Whitbread Inns and later Bass (now Mitchells and Butler’s) starting as a single site manager and on to be an area manager and ops manager.
I Joined Spinfield in December of 2014 as a part time TA, specifically working with pupil premium and S.E.N. children across the two key stages. I recently passed the Higher-Level Teaching Assistants (HLTA) with a distinction. This qualification allows me to cover teacher absence and take lessons when the need arises. I involve myself in all aspects of the curriculum and school life including extra-curricular activities too. I have attended three PGL residential courses, run the after-school cricket club and am currently running the debating club. I have assisted in organising several class trips, along with the class teachers, one to the Houses of Parliament and one to the Bovington Tank Museum. I joined the Board of Governors, as the Development Governor, in September 2017.
Jane Trainer - Co-opted Governor & Wellbeing Governor
My name is Jane Trainer. I am Vice Chair of Governors and responsible for Governor communications, producing our Governor Report to Parents each Summer Term. My role involves taking on responsibilities delegated to me by our Chair, James Grant, and I deputise for him or any other Chairs of various committees, during any absence. I also work closely with, and support our Chair, James, to establish a constructive relationship with everyone at Spinfield.
I have been a Governor for over 4 years and am passionate about my role and take it extremely seriously. I am Head of Acting and an Acting Coach & Teacher, working in several local schools. I am passionate about my subject having seen tangible, positive results in children's and young people's confidence, self-esteem and communication skills. I feel proud and lucky to be a Governor at Spinfield and have seen how my son has thrived within this unique and wonderful school.
Neil Martin - Co-opted Governor
I joined the Governing Board in 2016 and currently have the responsibilities of Equalities Governor and Chair of the ICT Working Group. I live in Marlow with my wife and two daughters, with both my daughters currently benefitting from an education at Spinfield School.
I am a Chartered Accountant and currently work for a company that provides resources and technology to the Education and Assessment sector.
Eileen Shaw - Co-opted Governor
Appointed as a school governor at Spinfield in 1996 I continue to have the privilege of working with the members of the Governing Body team, Headteacher and school staff, serving on, and chairing, various sub-committees The best part of this role is actually when involved with the pupils – of differing age, ability, temperament, as they move up through
the school and demonstrate their excitement as they master new learning and thrive on the social contacts. I am passionate about schools offering a holistic educational experience to prepare every individual for their future lives – whatever their choice of direction – and ensuring support is available. Relevant experience. Initially working in the Glass Industry following teacher training held posts at all levels – from class teacher, Head of Dept, Pastoral care (Trained Counsellor) and Deputy Head of large multi-cultural school. Awarded a number of secondments by Bucks LEA to enhance my understanding and share experience and run conferences and workshops for stakeholders, which included at County level serving as Development Officer for Education/Industry links and Country wide assisted in running the Teacher Placement Service, placing Teachers into industry and industrialists into schools. Prior to retirement
member of ‘Headteachers into Industry Scheme’ working for the Rail Industry. I have worked for the National Curriculum Council and other bodies with an educational focus including assisting schools achieve the Investors in People awards – Spinfield has this status.
James Grant - LA Governor
I have been a governor since 2012 and became chair of governors at Spinfield School at the start of the Autumn term in 2016, prior to that, I was Chair of the Curriculum, Teaching and Learning Committee.
I live in Marlow and have three children, who all attended Spinfield and benefited from the excellent start to their careers in education. I work for an international data and analytics business in new product development focusing primarily on UK / European insurance industry.
George Uden - Co-opted Governor
I was educated mainly in science disciplines and graduated from Bath University with a degree in Chemistry and then Cambridge University with a PhD in Chemistry. I spent my career in the Food Industry and worked for blue chip brand owners (Colmans of Norwich, Safeway, Premier Foods/Mr Kipling, British Sugar/Silver Spoon) in various senior technical management roles, leading innovation and quality assurance focused teams - I retired at the start of 2017. I am currently volunteering for the National Trust, Citizens Advice/Witness Service and Maidenhead Cycle Hub Charity organisations alongside the Governor role for Spinfield School which I started in the Autumn term of 2017.
My responsibility areas for the Governor role are Safeguarding Governor as well as subject lead for Science. I am a member of the Curriculum Teaching and Learning Governor team which looks at the teaching quality and performance (achievement and progress) at the school. I'm also a member of the Pay Review Committee group of Governors.
My other interests include cycling, hill walking, reading and cooking.
Lizzie Watts - Co-opted Governor
I am local to Henley and joined as a Governor with over 19 years of experience in the education industry. I have a passion for learning, and believe that good education provides the foundations to enable individuals to reach their potential in life.
I am currently responsible for the standards and regulatory compliance of qualifications offered by Pearson within the UK and Internationally including A levels, GCSEs, BTECs and Apprenticeships, working regularly with regulators, ministries, and other examination boards to deliver at an industry level. Within this time I have had over ten years of operational experience within an educational setting and has successfully led large departments and small technical teams. I have presented at national and international conferences on assessment related topics.
I have a MSc in Occupational Psychology, is a mentor for Women in Leadership and has led leadership development programmes. I am the link governor for English and EYS
Wendy Jacob - Parent Governor
I became a parent governor in 2019 when my son joined the Reception class at Spinfield. Having grown up in Marlow and spent most of my life here, I'm keen to play an active part in the community and support the school. I started my career in recruitment before moving on to work in higher education on the employability agenda and transformation projects related to this. I currently work for a medical consultancy, leading on strategic and operational HR projects as well as managing a team to deliver HR operations for the international part of our business, which covers everywhere outside of the US (20+ countries). In my role as governor, I am the subject lead for sport and also have the pleasure of following a year group as they progress through the school.
Tom Ronan - Parent Governor
I joined as a parent governor in 2020. I have two children who attend Spinfield School and have lived in Marlow since 2007.
My areas of responsibility as a governor include Maths and French as well as being attached to a year group.
This role gives me a great opportunity to see student’s progress and development as they move through the school.
I work for London Fire Brigade as a Station Officer at a busy Technical Rescue Centre. I have an MSc in Crisis and Disaster Management.
Being a parent governor allows me the opportunity to support the school and teachers and provide promote the excellent work of the school in the community.
My other interests include outdoor and endurance sports.
Jo Barnes - Co-opted Governor
